Project Overview
We got the call on a weekday morning: a fire shutter on the children’s ward had failed during routine operation. Not ideal; in a building where fire compartmentation isn’t optional, it’s the law, and it’s the difference between a contained incident and a very bad day.
- The shutter failed during a routine test/operation; the ward’s estates team spotted it straight away and got in touch.
- We treated it as an emergency call-out because a fire shutter that won’t close isn’t doing its job.
- Inspection on arrival showed the old shutter was no longer compliant with current fire safety regulations; it had done its time and wasn’t coming back from this one.
- We replaced it fast, working around ward operations so the hospital didn’t have to shut anything down or move patients to get the job done.
- From first contact to completed job, the whole thing was wrapped up in two weeks.
The Challenge: Replacing a Non-Compliant Fire Shutter
A children’s ward is about as sensitive a site as you get. You’ve got patients who can’t just be relocated at short notice, staff running a full clinical schedule, and a fire shutter that’s meant to hold the line between wards if the worst happens, but currently isn’t.
The challenges on this one:
- Speed mattered. A hospital can’t operate with a known gap in its fire compartmentation, so this wasn’t a job that could be scheduled for a few weeks.
- Working in hours, around a working ward. This was daytime work carried out while the ward stayed operational, not an out-of-hours job. The new shutter had to travel up through the building via the lift on a trolley provided on site, up to the fourth floor, without disrupting the ward below or around it.
- The old shutter was outdated. Once we got eyes on it, it was clear this wasn’t a quick fix; the unit no longer met current fire safety standards, so a repair would only have been a temporary patch on a bigger problem.
- Fire compartmentation on a children’s ward isn’t a nice-to-have. If fire or smoke gets past a failed shutter, it’s not just a building issue; it’s patients and staff who are directly at risk.
- The hospital had to keep running. No shutting the ward, no disrupting clinical care. We had to work the job around a live hospital environment, not the other way round.
Crucially, because all Adams Industrial Doors engineers are fully CRB-checked, our team could deploy straight onto a sensitive children’s ward without causing security or safeguarding delays for the NHS estates team.
Team insight: “On a hospital job like this, half the skill is in how you work, not just what you fit. You’re moving kit through corridors with patients and staff going about their day, so everything gets planned around ward routine, quiet hours, staff handovers, the lot.” Ash
Our Fire Shutter Replacement Solution
Once we were on site, the plan came together quickly:
- Initial inspection and compliance check: we assessed the failed shutter against current fire safety regulations to confirm what we suspected: it needed replacing, not patching.
- Recommendation to replace, not repair: We don’t upsell, and we don’t under-sell either. If a shutter’s genuinely past compliance, we say so, and we said so here.
- Strip-out of the old unit: the area was cordoned off, the old shutter removed and taken away from site.
- Transport to the fourth floor: the new shutter was moved up through the building by lift using a trolley supplied on site, keeping the ward clear throughout.
- Fire shutter installation: this involved a new, regulation-compliant unit, sized and specified for the opening and fitted with minimal disruption to ward operations.
- Testing and commissioning: this confirmed the new shutter closes reliably, holds its fire rating, and meets current UK fire safety standards.
- Handover: the ward’s estates team was shown the new system and controls, and the shutter was handed straight over, back in service the same visit.
The result: a ward back to full fire compliance, with a shutter the hospital can rely on rather than one flagged on every future inspection.
In the client’s own words: “Fantastic! The old door has been stuck down, so we appreciate the speed of the order.”
Supporting Ongoing Fire Door Maintenance at the Hospital
This wasn’t a cold call-out. The hospital is already on our regular fire shutter servicing and maintenance programme, which is exactly why we could move as quickly as we did; we know the site, we know the access routes, and we know the kit already in the building.
- An existing relationship meant a faster response. No time wasted working out where things are or who to speak to on site.
- Routine inspection is what catches problems like this before they become emergencies, and where it doesn’t, it’s what gets a fix moving within days rather than dragging on.
- The hospital stays on our maintenance schedule going forward, so ageing or borderline shutters get flagged before they fail rather than after.
- Repeat business tells its own story. Hospitals don’t hand out second chances to contractors who don’t turn up or don’t know the site; we’re still on theirs.
Why Fire Shutters Are Essential for NHS Hospitals
A fire shutter isn’t there to look the part. In a hospital, it’s doing a specific job:
- Contains the spread of fire and smoke between compartments, buying critical time in a building where evacuation isn’t always quick or simple.
- Protects patients, staff and visitors, particularly on wards like this one where patients may not be able to move themselves.
- Keeps the hospital compliant with UK fire safety legislation, not just a box-ticking exercise, but a legal requirement that gets audited.
- Suitable for hospitals, care settings and other high-risk environments where the cost of a shutter failing isn’t measured in downtime; it’s measured in risk to people.
- Works quietly in the background the rest of the time, letting the ward run its normal daily operations without a second thought, until the day it’s needed, when it needs to work first time.
